GLO Maker - Generative Learning Objects

GLO Maker
1. What is it? GLO maker (http://glomaker.org/) is an authoring tool that allows you to create adaptable reusable learning objects. GLO stands for Generative Learning Objects. A GLO is a learning object that is designed to be pedagogically correct and reusable.  These learning object are meant to be interactive multimedia
2. How does it work?
The GLO maker has a two part process. First it allow you to create a storyboard, then second it allows you to design using either flexible templates or a custom design. After you have created a learning object you are able to run them in your website or LMS. GLO maker encourages users to share their reusable learning objects so that others can use their design and customize to their own needs.
3. How is it most useful for Instructional Designers?
This tool is very nice for encouraging instructional designers and trainers to build in interactivity into their work by creating simple to use templates. These templates allow IDs to incorporate flash animation, images, mp3, quizzing, shapes, step through sequences, and video. The best part about this tool over many I have reviewed is that this is open source and free for educational use. In addition they have recently released information on delivering learning objects for mobile devices specifically android.
4. What are the downsides?
Glo maker has a bit of a learning curve and needs some help with simplicity and design flexibility. It does not appear to be truly open source in that I can contribute to the bank of Learning Objects but not to the design of the software. I did like this tool and will use it going forward.
