the more friends you have on facebook, the more you may need to control the information flow coming to you via your news feed. you can control this by scrolling down to the bottom of your new sfeed (the default view shows the newsfeed) and clicking on "options for news feed."
you'll see a control panel of sorts where you can choose the types of stories you see, as well as specify which friends you want to hear from from, and which less. there is a link "how do i use this?" you may click on to get detailed information.
if you want to prune your friends list, you click on the "friends" tab, then click on "everyone." you will see an "x" to the right of the name which you can click to delete the person. they will not receive notification, so it's a "gentle" delete. (however, at some point they may search for you to send you a message and then they will know you deleted them--unless they're new to facebook, in which case they might think they accidentally deleted you and try to refriend you :-) )

Awesome!!! I need more tips
Awesome!!! I need more tips like this. I don't have time to play with FB but end using it more than I think.
I do wish you could categorize your friends into groups like work, school, business, fitness, mac users, etc. Then view each of these groups as a separate feed. This would be closer to reality as everyone has separate circles of friends. You have work friends, special interest friends, old friends you never see, friends you share activities, and so on. When I use FB I generally want to see what is occurring in each circle or group, not necessarily just a particular user.
do you know about facebook friends list for organizing friends?
i didn't, until i read your comment and did some research (ok, i actually googled "organize friends on facebook" and that was the extent of my research).
click on the friends tab, and on the left you will see "make a new list."
click on that and name your list (e.g., family, colleagues, photo friends, best friends, ex-girlfriends :-), etc.)
add your friends (you can add the same person to multiple lists). you can then view updates by list.
did that help?
curious if anyone else is using this feature, and if so, do you find it useful?
the features
Yes, I have used those features to help separate people I know from facebook friends, so yes, it is useful. I like to keep people in groups from where I met them, weather it was work, school, or back in high school that we first met. The feature is good, and so far I have been using one feature a lot, when I receive information about people I care not to hear about, but still wish to remain friends with. When a story comes up about a specific person, simply hover your mouse over the story, and an options button will appear on the upper right of the story, click that, and then click either "more" or "less" to get more or less stories about that specific person.
